Ottawa Stray Cat Rescue Cutie Of The Week: Pink

Female, DSH Calico, est DOB April 19, 2018. Adoption Fee: $200

Status: Adopted since original post written

First of all, this gorgeous kitten’s name is Pink! Pink started her life in a rural colony. However, some kind strangers came to her rescue and brought her to foster care. Since then this little kitten has been growing bigger and stronger everyday.  These days Pink is always up for a play session, and loves to nap with just as much enthusiasm. She especially adores the finer things in life like a warm fluffy bed and a cat tree where she can sit up top and see the world. Pink is always happy to be picked up for a hello. Most of all, she can’t wait to meet her new adoptive family!

Adoption Information

The adoption fee per kitten is $200. OSCR have included in this fee a veterinary exam, first set of shots, deworming, spay/neuter, and microchipping. The adopter will be responsible for second and third sets of shots if they haven’t been administered yet. Furthermore, some kittens or adults are adopted prior to sterilization surgery. Consequently, adopter will be responsible to schedule and bring in their adopted cat for surgery. However, this service is included in the adoption fee.

If you are interested in meeting Pink, please feel free to Complete an Adoption Interest Application, or Contact Ottawa Stray Cat Rescue on Facebook!

Editor’s Note: Since this post was written, Pink has been adopted – but don’t let that stop you! Visit the Ottawa Stray Cat Rescue on Facebook, where you can learn about all of the other rescued cats & kittens who still need a loving home! Who knows, you just might find a furry new friend who’s a perfect fit!

WHY DO WE ASK FOR STOOL SAMPLES FOR YOUR PET?

Stool Samples – Why Are They Important?

We get it – collecting and bringing in a fecal sample is not fun. But here’s why it’s important. When you bring in your stool samples, we process it and check for microscopic parasites or parasite eggs. Unfortunately, some intestinal parasites found commonly in dogs and cats can also infect humans. Children, the elderly, or people who are immunosuppressed are especially at risk. In humans, the larva of these parasites travel through the body and may cause serious illness, including blindness.

The Bigger Picture

In the United States roundworms infect three to six million people each year. In some areas tests have shown parasite exposure in almost a quarter of the population. A recent study in Halifax showed that over 25% of school children had antibodies indicating exposure to roundworms.

Even pets that don’t leave the house can carry immature forms of parasites they had as puppies or kittens. They can also become infected from eggs that come in on shoes or potting soil. There are plenty of chances for your outdoor pet to pick something up. A good prevention program, including fecal exams and regular deworming (at least 4 times per year), can help keep both you and your furry companions healthy.

According to the results of a study done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 14% of the U.S. population is infected with Toxocara, or internal roundworms, contracted from dogs and cats. We recommend deworming your pets a minimum of four times yearly, and running a fecal test at their yearly exams.

Babies And Dogs: Introducing Your Pet To Your New Baby

As an expecting parent, preparing for a new baby can be an exciting time. You buy your diapers, install your car seat, and even pick up a few cherished children’s books to read to your child. But in all the excitement, many expectant parents forget one important step when it comes to babies and dogs. It’s important to make appropriate preparations before introducing your pet to your new baby! Here at Fisher Glen Animal Hospital, we have compiled a few tips to help everything go smoothly when you first introduce your new baby to your dog or cat.

Begin Preparing Early

You should start preparing your pet for a new baby well before the baby arrives. Pets, especially dogs, need time to adjust to a new family member. A curious and affectionate pet can unintentionally harm a baby. As a result of this natural curiosity, a child may be accidentally scratched or even dropped when a friendly dog jumps up on you to investigate. Keep your pet’s nails well trimmed and correct any behaviour problems now – before the baby comes home.

Preparing your pet

Here are a couple steps you can follow to prepare your dog for meeting your new baby.

To begin, bring home a wet diaper or blanket the baby has been in for your pet to sniff. Reward your pet with words and caresses so it forms a positive association with the baby even before they are introduced. Play a tape of a baby crying at high volume and praise your pet while listening to it. By the time you introduce dog and baby, your pet will be more likely to adhere to basic training despite their curiosity.
